Made my first homemade baby food today. We went with avocado and sweet potatoes. I was nervous that I would have to do a lot of research to know which foods and how to; however, the Baby Bullet gives you all the goods needed to go forth and concoct! However, I’m not going to lie-it is A LOT of work and cleanup. BUT you don’t do this because it’s easy! You do it, because it’s very healthy for your baby and saved money. The fact that baby food (fruits and vegetables) has a shelf life of 3 years, sounds like a load of preservatives, additives and just junk! I wouldn’t want to eat a 3 year old banana or green bean, would you? I get it – it’s just convenient and don’t begrudge any mom who uses jarred babyfood – especially when in a rush or on-the-go. However, I want to chose the best for my little lady! I want to get closer to nature!
I am hoping that it will get easier when I know what I’m not doing and not constantly looking at directions. I have
found this with most baby contraptions: super overwhelming and complicated at first until you get the hang of it (and then baby changes.-such is life). However, no matter how acquainted I get with the machinery, the most time-consuming about making the baby food is the peeling, chopping and steaming to prep for the bulleting. So, I suggest getting dear old daddy to help with that since it’s easy, but tedious work.
Sidebar on Breastfeeding
I know it’s really not the same, but so that it’s not so overwhelming and so much time away from baby, I may just trade making food for breast pumping. (As I write this pumping away after spending 2 hours making food). I keep saying that I am going to ween every month, but 6 months was my goal (and the Pediatrician’s recommendations). We do supplement and each month, I nurse/pump a little less. But knowing so many women that had such problems breastfeeding, I almost feel guilty quitting since it was pretty easy. Well, maybe I shouldn’t use “easy”, but say “not-so-problematic”.
Growing Baby Food
When the weather breaks, I am planning to grow our own food (supplement with store bought organic goods). Stay tuned for more on making baby food and home gardening! We’ve been growing food for 3 years, so I’ve got that down a bit, and I’ve always wanted to bring up baby naturally. I know that this is easier said than done, but I’ve got to try and keep you all in the loop as I do it! Stay tuned for more natural baby news!
