Even if you are not a runner or an athlete, it is a great experience to challenge yourself to a run or obstacle course. It’s even more fun to enlist some friends in the exciting exercise!
Although I workout, I’ve always been scared to do a Race and the other “R” word…Run..In my case jog/walk! After my husband competed in nation’s largest 10 mile race and bragged about his increasingly improving time, I figured it was my time. I had to participate in something similar, but more on my level. My friend asked me to join her team for the R.O.C. Ridiculous Obstacle Challenge in Philly (check out the promo video). This friend doesn’t really workout, so at least I’d be able to keep up! Plus it looked like a lot of fun and not too hardcore for a slightly out-of-shape new mom like me. I still set goals to “train” and actually jog at the gym. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to the gym as much as I had hoped, since life and baby stuff gets in the way. I was happy to be participating with some not-too-athletic people. However, it was great motivation to have a goal and a deadline to run with!
So, the day arrived for the R.O.C., and my team was both excited and nervous.
R.O.C.er Teams dressed up in matching costumes, tutus, t-shirts, and goofy outfits! It made the day more exciting to see the creative and fun attire of the runners. The course involved water obstacles, feats of strength and agility. Most obstacles included blowup machines or water for soft landings — I was thankful for all those bouncy landings, since I FELL A LOT!!! But we cheered each other on, picked one another up after a spill, and finished as a team! It was exhilarating to do something both social and healthy, other than an aerobics class!
So, get a friend and sign-up for a R.O.C., walk, or race in your area!

Just remember to go at your own pace and have fun!
