I don’t make my own baby food because it’s easy or tastes better. I make it because I feel comfort in knowing what my baby is eating, where it came from and how it was grown.
Plus, it doesn’t make me squirm when I feed my baby a mouthful in wondering how long ago it was grown! Of course, I will use jarred food or squeeze packets on-the-go or when I just don’t have anything in the house. I certainly would never condemn any mom who does–millions of kids turn out to be lovely and healthy. I’m not going to lie, it’s time-consuming and somewhat tedious. However, the shelf life of store-bought food makes me wonder what else is in that sweet potato or carrots, because I know the real thing shouldn’t last that long! With any parenting advice, do what you can or whatever makes you feel comfortable, but just consider. And if you do choose to make your own food, here is an excellent reasource. I usually go with what the Baby Bullet instructs; however, as we move up the food chain, I find their guidance wanting and lacking in answers to important questions.
Here is a great find to help with those unanswered questions at http://www.wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com
For example, this article about “To Peel or Not to Peel” was helpful for me! Yes, it’s soooo much easier not to peel (especially tempting for foods you eat with a peel on). However, after reading this, I’m a peeler and you may be one too. http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/peel-fruits-vegetables-for-baby-food.htm
-Don’t want to waste those peels?
My mama always taught me ‘waste not, want not’, so that’s how I roll! Plus, fruit and veggie peels have tons of nutrients. And I have found great use for my peels: like tossing them in a salad or pasta dish for added texture and vegetable kick. With fruit peels, I throw them into a ziplock for a snack or add to my cereal. If that does not sound appetizing to you, at least compost the excess to utilize nature’s goodness! Sometimes what’s on the outside counts too!
