#WellMomBlogs ~ Block It Like It’s Hot: The Sunblock Situation

It’s the time of the year again–the pool is ready, the beach is calling and the sun is blazing!

Summer is also known as “sunblock season”. Although we should sport it year-round, summer is when we go hardcore under the sun!

This is when going out to play becomes a wrestling match for the mom of a toddler when trying to apply the ole torturous sunscreen! This task always gets onlookers gasping but to the toddler mom, this is our life! Huffington Post’s Hilarious “How To Put Sunscreen on a Toddler”this satire perfectly captures the satire of this sunscreen screaming salsa!

Before I had my children (and before my hormones wreaked havoc on my sun damage), I used to just grab the sale sunblock off the shelf at grocery store!  Mostly I wouldn’t even wear it or sometimes I’d be silly and get an oil/tanner with Level 5 spf, which is a joke!  I hate to admit, but I did a lot of “fake and bake”. Now I’m using “tan in a can”, and cover up as much as possible!

Now, I take sun care much more seriously!  I realize that sunblock is so important and since we wear it so often, it better have ingredients that don’t make us sick, irritated or even hospitalized! Most importantly, we want to be sure our loved ones are safe in the sun and using suncare.

I was prompted to write this blog after I was sent this story by Pop Sugar about this poor child whose face suffered severe burns from using aerosol sunscreen.  (Before you ask, to answer the question:  yes, the mom did not apply directly to the face and followed the correct instructions to spray it in her hand before applying to the child’s face).  I wanted to share Kyla’s story to hopefully prevent more sunscreen afflicted injuries.

The Mother’s Warning to Parents: use extreme caution or avoid using aerosol sunscreens! There is an increasing number of disturbing amount of cases like this one.

So, now I’ve got that poor baby’s face in the back of my mind, and I’m back to the drawing board with sunblocks.  Luckily there are some great resources out there!

The EWG Sunscreen Guide rates the hazards and efficacy of sunscreens, and daily moisturizers and lip products with SPF ratings. EWG launched the guide in 2007 because the federal Food and Drug Administration had failed to set modern safety standards for sunscreens. Without EWG’s guide, consumers would have to sift through misleading market claims and complex ingredient lists to determine if their favorite sunscreens would help protect them from sun-related skin damage.

EWG’s research has discovered that some sunscreens have several serious problems. They are pressing the Food and Drug Administration to issue rules that address these deficiencies. In the meantime, EWG’s guide aims to help consumers make good choices, and avoid sun damage and cancer.

EWG’s 2018 Guide to Sunscreens rates the hazards and efficacy of approximately 650 sunscreens, 250 daily moisturizers and 115 lip products with SPF values. Assessments are based on ingredients disclosed on product labels.
