Book a free trial or class today with Alyssa McIntyre Maley–awesome environmental educator mama! Or Join this Fall, as classes start on 9/8 @ 9:30am at Fort Washington State Park, PA!

Photos: This was last week’s class where we collected natural items, added them to one big pot, stir in some fun water and imagination. There we made “stone soup” while reading along with the old folk tale Stone Soup!

LESSONS LEARNED:

This week Tinkergarten takes their study of executive function skills one step further. This incredible and interrelated set of skills can be daunting to crack, and so they focus on a key, foundational subset of executive function skills—Focus and Self Control.

Read more about what Focus and Self Control really boil down to, how you can see evidence that your kids are actually developing these power skills as you watch them play, and get tips on how to easily promote these skills in your day-to-day.

ACTIVITY

If you find yourself near a river, in the yard, or anywhere you can find stones, try stacking stone towers. It’ll help you center and block out the chaos of the world around you, but it will also offer kids of any age a great way to build focus and self control.

Focus is so often mistaken for the ability to sit still. But it shouldn’t be, because learning to control your own attention, emotions and behavior is an active, messy process — just like all learning.

We love our dirt and sticks, but let us not forget the super toy that’s under foot: stones. Whether smoothed by the elements or rough and still irregular in shape, stones delight and challenge kids in a way that even our favorite old wooden blocks can’t. Building with stones, kids learn about balance, develop focus, learn problem solving strategies and activate their imaginations with each stack, tower or little world they build.
