Craft Beer Revolution: Locally Grown Ingredients, Community, Artistry and Even Health Through Beer?

As a #historynerd and #artlover, who has a mission to cultivate #plantpower, Beer and Wine are a nice pairing! As we are a growing community of people who care about where their food comes from and who prefer locally-grown plants to make up our diet, which can also include wine and beer! Actually, experts do say that grabbing a beer is healthy!

On a national level, and especially local to Pennsylvania, there is a major upswing in the number of craft breweries to open, giving new life to locally-grown ingredients; in addition to cultivating the ‘brew pub’ culture and passionate beer community.

A ‘craft beer’ has many long definitions, but put simply, it is made by a brewer that is small, independent, and traditional. The beer is a CRAFT of a small business owner, and is liken to handmade, home-cooked and is certainly NOT mass-produced by a mega-brewery.

Pennsylvania produced about 3.7 million barrels of beer last year, once again making us the biggest beer-producing state in the nation. Beer is so big here that now that there’s even a documentary that explains how we got here, as well as who is doing the brewing.

A recent, very well-done documentary was released “Poured in Pennsylvania” on Amazon Prime. This piece is a great education even if you are not a beer drinker, as it covers the history of America, Pennsylvania and Beer! From America’s oldest brewery to taprooms changing the landscape of small towns across the commonwealth, GK Visual’s documentary film, Poured in PA, illustrates the importance of this ancient—but newly redeveloped—beer industry and its impact on Pennsylvania.

Ben Franklin and Beer

As PA is a lover of Beer and Ben, we tried to find a graphic with this favorite saying “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy”. However, being the #historynerd that I am, I checked the facts and there is no evidence that Franklin ever said it. Ben actually talked about wine, which often is actually preferred with food (and is also a blessed plant)! I also do remember from his autobiography Ben’s mentioning how he beat out the drunks at work by drinking water instead! Oh BF always keeps us on our toes! More on this story from the Spruce Eats!
