RECIPE: DIY NATURAL PLAY DOUGH ENHANCED WITH #PLANTSPOWER OILS

This is a repost from last year’s Spring Break — the same is true for this homemade natural play dough although we need this dough and soothing home activities more than ever at this time!  We had a blast making the dough (mess warning for that part!) and then my kids enjoyed hours of tactile calming play!  All you need is a few ingredients from around-the kitchen, like flour, salt, vegetable oil, water, and cream of tartar can be substituted.  You can add more fun with food coloring and essential oils.  WATCH OUR YOUTUBE VIDEO!

We even enjoyed a family game night of “guess my sculpture”.  This time is hard for everyone, but especially parents to make their home the place of imagination and fun.  Plus it is safe for kids who like to put everything in their mouth!

By enhancing the salt dough with essential oils, during play, all the benefits of potent #plantpower can be absorbed into your child’s skin and breathed in for aromatherapy.  We made 4 times the recipe – each batch with a different color and enlightening essential oil!

NATURAL PLAY DOUGH RECIPE

INGREDIENTS:
1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
2 Tablespoons cream of tartar (find in the spice section or amazon)
or substitute with fresh lemon juice or white vinegar.
1 Tablespoon vegetable/olive oil
1 cup water
ADD LATER:
2 teaspoons food coloring (or less)
Your Favorite Essential Oils
(Oil Recommendations: orange, citrus fresh, Joy, lavender, stress away, lemon, vetiver).
– About 4oz Carrier Oil: grapeseed, coconut, etc.

DIRECTIONS:
– Mix together all the ingredients, except the food coloring, in a medium pot.
– Cook over low/medium heat, about 3-5 minutes, continuously stirring.
– Once it begins to thicken, add the food coloring.
– Continue stirring until the mixture is much thicker and begins to clump like playdough.
– Remove the dough onto wax paper or a plate or floured board to cool.
– After cooled, you can store in a sealed container or zip up bag and put in the refrigerator overnight.
– OR now you can start playing with your warm colorful dough!

LET’S GET OILY!

Add the essential oils post recipe,  Here, is where we experimented. For about 1 adult handful of dough (about the yield of the above recipe), I added a squirt (about 1 tablespoon) of carrier oil but I guess you could use olive oil. The idea here is to have something to spread out and dilute your essential oils, just like you want on your body!
