Sure you can buy bath bombs anywhere, but they are not only expensive, but they can also be toxicities, absorbed through our skin. We have a fun, easy recipe to make your own bath bombs, with your favorite scents with naturally beneficial ingredients.

Every year at the holidays, my daughters and I decide on homemade gifts to make. We nix baking cookies for our gifts and opt for healthier alternatives, usually using essential oils (e.g. olive oil with lemon/oregano, thieves clean-all spray, laundry balls with natural scents, peppermint cocoa mix, ornaments/diffusers and lots more). This year, bath bombs are totally “in” and my girls (5/8 years old) love science experiments! So, let’s tell you about these bomb gifts that we made for neighbors, friends, and teachers (the ones who really need to relax!)
We tweaked a recipe from Recipes with Essential Oils, and the ingredients list is below
BATH BOMB INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup of baking soda
- 3/4 cup of citric acid
- 3/4 cup of Epsom salts
- 4 tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon water in a spray bottle (optional)
- 10-12 drops of lavender essential oil (or substitute another favorite scent)
- 2″ metal bath bomb molds

BENEFITS OF YOUR BATH BOMB
- Epsom salts are known for soothing achy or tight muscles. Adding Epsom salts to a bath can also increase magnesium levels in the body, which can be depleted by stress.
- Coconut oil is a natural source of Vitamin E. This makes it great for moisturizing the skin.
- Adding essential oils to a bath bomb can have numerous therapeutic benefits. Listen to your body and choose an oil to support how you are feeling!
- Citric acid and baking soda. This is what creates the fizz.

BATH BOMB DIRECTIONS (this is the part we tweaked). See what the original says on Recipes with Essential Oils:
1st mix coloring, essential oils, Epsom salt,
2nd mix in the baking soda, citric acid
3rd slowly add in the coconut oil. Slowly add the wet ingredients to the salt/baking soda mixture. It is very important that you do not add the liquid too fast. This will cause the mixture to activate prematurely. If the mixture seems too dry, use the spray bottle to add a bit of water one spray at a time (this process was finicky and hard to explain).
Use a spoon to slowly combine the ingredients. The mixture should resemble wet sand (if not, spray a bit of water).
Fill both sides of the mold and press together firmly. Both pieces of the mold should close together tightly.
We used the sphere bomb molds, but found they didn’t hold shape, so after forming the ball with the mixture, I put it into a muffin tray. Left overnight to dry/solidify. (They came out to look like bath bomb cupcakes).
This recipe makes about 3-4 bath bombs.
We gave as gifts, so we put wrapped in a plastic bag, with ribbon and label.
THE BOMB BATH:
Drop into a warm tub, and enjoy!
SHOWER POWER: You can also use in a shower – Just plug/fill the tub with 1 inch of warm water, drop the bomb in and start your shower – your feet can absorb a lot of the benefits of the oils and salts.
RELAX AND ENJOY!
